The role in a nutshell:
A 30min weekly telephone call to reduce an older person's feelings of loneliness and social isolation. Building a strong friendship and connection over the phone to improve their overall wellbeing. What will you be doing?
Volunteers commit to supporting one person for a minimum of six months through a weekly phone call, offering friendly conversation, a listening ear, and emotional support.
Conversations will focus on getting to know each other and may include reflecting on current or past interests, discussing day‑to‑day enjoyment, or exploring small ideas they might like to try at home or, depending on their circumstances, within their community.
Volunteers may also research and share ideas related to interests, hobbies, or activities that help pass the time and reduce feelings of loneliness.
How would you be supported in this role?
You’ll receive some training before being matched that will cover things like loneliness, social isolation and safeguarding. You will receive ongoing support throughout your volunteering journey, including regular check-ins and ad-hoc peer-to-peer support to share experiences with other volunteers. As well as clear guidance on Age UK Sheffield’s processes, policies and procedures to ensure you feel confident and supported in your role.
Why do we need volunteers in this role?
Many older people in our community face loneliness, social isolation, and a loss of confidence — especially after sudden changes to their health or circumstances. These challenges can make it difficult to leave the house, engage with others, or feel part of a community.
Telephone befriending plays a vital role in offering regular and reliable companionship. A friendly voice and consistent check in can make a significant difference to someone feeling remembered, valued, and supported.
Over time, these conversations can help older people rediscover interests, feel more positive about their days, and regain a sense of connection to the world around them.
