The role in a nutshell:
Support an older person through regular visits or phone calls so they can rebuild confidence, reconnect with hobbies or community. This role is essential in reducing loneliness and social isolation. What will you be doing?
Volunteers commit to supporting one person for six months, once a week, meeting regularly face to face or speaking over the phone to encourage them to reconnect with hobbies, interests, people, and/or local groups.
Together, you will set small, meaningful goals that promote wellbeing, independence or build confidence to reduce loneliness, and help them rediscover the things that bring joy to their life.
How would you be supported in this role?
You’ll receive extensive training before being matched that will cover things like loneliness, social isolation, goal-setting and safeguarding. You will receive ongoing support throughout your volunteering journey, including regular check-ins and ad-hoc peer-to-peer support to share experiences with other volunteers. As well as clear guidance on Age UK Sheffield’s processes, policies and procedures to ensure you feel confident and supported in your role.
Why do we need volunteers in this role?
Many older people in our community face loneliness, social isolation, and a loss of confidence — especially after sudden changes to their health or circumstances. These challenges can make it difficult to leave the house, engage with others, or feel part of a community.
Volunteers play a vital role in breaking this cycle. By offering companionship and encouragement, you’ll work with the person you are matched with to overcome some of the barriers they face and reignite their sense of independence and belonging.
