The role in a nutshell:
Could you have a regular friendly conversation with an older person in Barnsley? It would make a real difference to them!What will you be doing?
Volunteers commit to supporting one person at least once a week, meeting regularly face to face or speaking over the phone to encourage them to reconnect with hobbies, interests, people, and/or local groups.
You will promote wellbeing, independence and build confidence to reduce loneliness, and help them rediscover the things that bring joy to their life.
· To make weekly contact to a number of differing clients from all walks of life
· To adapt topics of conversation accordingly considering the needs and life experience of each individual client
· To listen to the client and to ensure that the conversation is client led
· To inform the Social Outreach and Engagement Worker of any concerns using the appropriate methods, when necessary
How would you be supported in this role?
You will receive ongoing support throughout your volunteering journey, including regular check-ins. As well as clear guidance on Age UK Barnsley's processes, policies and procedures to ensure you feel confident and supported in your role.
Travel expenses are covered as per the expenses policy.
Why do we need volunteers in this role?
Many older people in our community face loneliness, social isolation, and a loss of confidence — especially after sudden changes to their health or circumstances. These challenges can make it difficult to leave the house, engage with others, or feel part of a community.
Volunteers play a vital role in breaking this cycle. By offering companionship and encouragement, you’ll work with the person you are matched with to overcome some of the barriers they face and reignite their sense of independence and belonging.
Additional information:
Location: Town-wide across Barnsley, with efforts made to match you locally.
Time commitment: Flexible, ideally once a week for at least one hour (not including travel time). A minimum commitment of six months is required.
DBS check and references: A DBS check will be carried out (at no cost to you), and two references are required—one professional and one personal.
Responsible to: Volunteer Coordinator and Social Outreach and Engagement officer.
What skills, interests or experience might be helpful in this role?
· A genuine interest in older people and their welfare
· Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to talk to people from all walks of life
· Honesty, reliability and trustworthiness
· Confidence (or a willingness to grow in confidence)
· Empathy and patience, with an understanding of the challenges older people may face
· Flexibility to follow the needs of the person you support
· No previous experience is required — we provide full training and ongoing support
