Lead Volunteer (Woolwich)

Ongoing

Age UK Woolwich Shop

The role in a nutshell:

As a Lead Volunteer, you’ll help keep the shop running smoothly when managers aren’t around. You’ll open and close the shop, support other volunteers, and make sure day-to-day activities run well.

What will you be doing?

This is a key role with many responsibilities. Some are:

- Keep the shop safe and secure, including opening, closing, and banking the day’s money when needed.

- Follow our cash handling rules, including exchanges and refunds.

- Make sure health and safety rules are followed. Report any incidents using our online system.

- Show volunteers how to use the till.

- Give great customer service to everyone who visits or calls the shop.

- Take donations, promote Gift Aid, use the till, answer phones, keep the shop clean, price items, and answer customer questions.

- Follow age UK values and all our policies and procedures including Age Uk’s Code of Conduct and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policy.

How would you be supported in this role?

We’ll give you online and hands-on training to get started. You’ll also get regular refresher training and ongoing support, so you feel confident in your role. We’ll cover agreed expenses and give you the chance to shape your volunteering experience. If you’re stepping up as a Lead Volunteer, you’ll receive extra training for this role.

Why do we need volunteers in this role?

Lead Volunteers are vital to our retail team. By helping keep our shops open when staff aren’t there, you’ll make a real difference. You’ll help raise vital funds to support older people. You’ll also create a welcoming space for everyone who visits or donates, making sure we make a positive impact in the community.

Additional information:

We offer flexible shifts to fit your situation. For this role, we may sometimes need your help at set times, but we’ll always try to work around your availability.

As an Age UK volunteer, you'll get discounts on Age Co. products and services, plus offers from other brands through our discounts portal. Just ask your volunteer manager to find out what other perks are available.

What skills, interests or experience might be helpful in this role?

We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds. If you have retail or leadership experience, that’s a bonus, and we’ll provide all the training you need. We do ask for a regular commitment so you can stay up to date with shop activities and procedures.

Whether you're exploring a career in retail and want to gain valuable experience, or you're retired and want to share your skills, we'd love to hear from you. If you're a team player, happy to learn, and willing to follow Age UK's policies, you'll be a great addition to our inclusive, community-focused team.

Our shops work best when they reflect the diversity of the communities they serve. We're committed to finding a role that works for you.
